Often times, my teacher has engaged the students in a laboratory or an exercise that does not allow for too much free, discussing time after class. I have not yet observed a set routine as to the end of class as of yet. Often times, the teacher ends class with a small review session to get them thinking about what they just learned in class; that would be returning to the main idea of the lesson in a sense. I have not yet witnessed any dead time at the end of the period. Often times, students know that the bell is going to ring and they are usually prepared to leave right when it sounds. The astronomy unit plan has seemed to capture much student interest so that helps them pay attention till the end of the class. Often times students appear lethargic or unwilling to participate at the end of the period.
It seems difficult to motivate these students with class led discussions or laboratories. I think that during the closing of the lesson, it might be good to remind students again of the real-world application this information has so they can remember why they are learning this material. The end of the lesson might also be a good time for some formative assessment techniques to get a feel for what your students have grasped towards the end of the lesson. I would like to avoid by all means cutting the class period short because students fail to see the connection of it is not tied together at the end. In a good lecture, I notice the ending is the most important part because you can finally see how everything that was just introduced to you connects.
